Yerma

Yerma

Angel in the House Productions is excited to present Federico Garcia Lorca’s Yerma, newly translated and directed by Juliette Morison and Lola Murphy. Yerma (English: ‘barren’), the character of the title, is a woman living in rural Spain, driven to extremes in her desire to bear children. This production, richly evocative of 1930s Spain, but also of a place out of time and space, imbues this poetic text with a powerful physicality, and, in re-examining Lorca’s masterpiece, seeks to contest Yerma’s status as a victim, in a play with striking relevance to contemporary discussions about gender and mental illness.
