Villiers Quartet: Purcell, Britten & Saxton

Villiers Quartet: Purcell, Britten & Saxton

The second concert of the Villiers residency features works by three English composers. Purcell’s fantasias, heard here for string quartet, revisit the English viol consort genre established by John Blow and John Jenkins. They in turn form the inspiration for two 20th Century works by Britten and by his student, Robert Saxton.

Purcell - Fantasias
Purcell - Chacony (arr. Britten)
Robert Saxton - Fantazia
Britten - String Quartet No. 2
