Oxford May Musical Festival 2019

Oxford May Musical Festival 2019

Our twelth festival will again be entirely at the excellent facilities of St. John the Evangelist, Iffley Road. Our core mission remains the same: an authoritative mix of concerts from some of the leading musicians performing in the UK today and exciting lectures from experts in their fields. Science, music and the arts meet in creative harmony.

Once again we will be organising an exhibition throughout the Festival - Project Ansel and Arvo Pärt. Old friend Kaupo Kikas returns and says: “As a photographer, I have been working together with Arvo Pärt over ten years, following and documenting his working process and also in portrait sittings. Arvo Pärt's music is probably the greatest inspiration and influence on my visual art. For me, it is fascinating how Pärt's music merges into the essence that starts my visual engine. I consider myself very lucky that my inspiration is coming from the music instead of visual arts. Project "Ansel" takes us to America's last wild landscapes, where famous landscape photographer and environmentalist Ansel Adams worked his whole life. My thoughts pick up where Adams left off.  Key to project "Ansel" is Pärt's piece "My heart's in the Highlands" from the Robert Burns poem.”

The festival runs from May 2nd – 6th, with a format of lectures generally starting at 5:30pm and recitals at 8:00pm, except for Bank Holiday Monday, when the events are at 4pm and 6pm. Inaddition there are early afternoon concerts on Saturday and Sunday and an illustrated lecture on Ansel Adams by Kaupo Kikkas on Monday. Kaupo will also lead a photowalk on Sunday morning.
