Madam Butterfly

Madam Butterfly

A young woman is abandoned by the man for whom she has sacrificed everything. But she is stronger than anyone imagined.  Retold from a female, East-Asian perspective, this Madam Butterfly is transposed to 1980s Japan, where traditional cutlure collides with a new digital age, and the intimate exploration into the heart and mind of a young woman, is all the more poignant.

One of the best-loved operas of all time, Puccini's sublime music has been re-orchestrated to be performed by a diverse cast of eight singers, accompanied by four live musicians. This emotionally direct and beautiful production features one of Puccini’s most famous arias, Un bel dì vedremo.

Librettist and Director Poppy Burton-Morgan is celebrated across a variety of forms including musical theatre and opera (In the Willows at Oxford Playhouse 2019) and is Artistic Director of touring company Metta Theatre, who have visited Oxford venues regularly. Together with composer Ruth Chan (Royal Shakespeare Company’s Snow in Midsummer) and set and costume designer Cindy Lin (2015 Linbury Prize finalist), Poppy has re-evaluated the values of Madam Butterfly, whilst preserving the truth of the original story.

Olivier award-winning OperaUpClose is an ambitious, inclusive, touring opera company producing high quality, innovatively staged, unintimidating and affordable English language productions. Working with exciting composers, librettists, directors and performers to create productions which challenge, excite and, where necessary, confront some of the sexist, racist or other outdated baggage which hampers otherwise great works of art. The company’s mission is to show that opera is a vibrant, living art form that everyone can enjoy and be inspired by.
