7th SJE Arts International Piano Series: Eric Lu
Tuesday 4 February 2020, 7.30pm
In March last year, Eric Lu stepped into the SJE Arts Piano Series at short notice to cover for illness. His performance so impressed and delighted the audience that we immediately invited him to return.
Winner of First Prize at Leeds International Piano Competition 2018, Eric Lu has moved confidently on to the international stage. His 2018/2019 season saw debuts with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Vasily Petrenko and with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra and Thomas Dausgaard, along with recitals in Paris, St Petersburg, Eindhoven and London and a seven-date tour of South Korea. Future recital dates take him to venues including Wigmore Hall and the Southbank Centre, London, BOZAR Brussels and Gewandhaus Leipzig.
Born in Massachusetts in 1997, Eric Lu first came to attention as a prize winner at the 2015 Chopin International Competition in Warsaw. He followed this by winning both the 2017 International German Piano Award and the US National Chopin Competition. At Leeds, his semi-final round performance of Chopin’s Sonata no.2 was praised for taking ‘one’s breath away with its measured grandeur’ (The Independent)
Tonight’s programme features Brahms’ Four Pieces for Piano, the last compositions Brahms wrote for the solo instrument, and the short but charming Schubert Alegretto, composed as a farewell to a dear friend who was leaving Vienna. The main focus, however, is on Frederic Chopin. Along with 3 Mazurkas to open, post-interval Eric Lu will perform Chopin’s magnificent set of 24 Preludes, the miniature masterpieces that challenged all the preconceptions of the time, that preludes were mere introductory works.
Tickets: £30, £26, £17; under 25s £10 reduction.
