Middle of the road and in the middle of the Midlands, Burtonwood is a town like any other. As the council budget is cut and public services are slashed, the town’s trade and transport dry up. Horticulture is left to ruin, hospitals turn away patients, and the high street houses the homeless.

In the ‘Town Welfare Department’ of the council offices, four phones charging extortionate rates ring constantly with complaints. Those tasked with answering them attempt to offer solutions, repeating the mantra that the cuts are only temporary measures ‘until we’ve taken back control’. However, as they soon learn, some cuts leave scars, all cause hurt, and some can haunt you for the rest of your life. Nothing is temporary, not least pain.'

 

Cutting Room is part of the New Writing Festival

The OUDS New Writing Festival is an annual competition to find Oxford's best student playwrights and showcase their work.

At the Burton Taylor studio, four pieces of new writing selected by the OUDS committee will be shown and judged by a professional playwright for the title of "Best New Script".

The festival aims to provide mentoring and support for new writers, as well as encouraging individuals from the Oxford student community to become generally more involved with drama.
