Mon 1 Jan 0001 - Sat 29 Jun 2019,
Becoming a Dragon is a short film that captures the emotions and incredible stories of players at the Mexico City Homeless World Cup in November 2018. Predominantly following the Welsh Men’s team, this film encapsulates the true meaning of what it is to ‘belong’ and how the simple action of playing football can transform lives. Over 450 players from 40 countries competed in the weeklong tournament.
A celebration of sport at its finest, uniting every race, creed, religion and background into one festival of football magic. Here you are judged for the talent of your game and not your troubled past. Respected as an international footballer and given the honour of singing your national anthem this is where lives truly change, where faith is restored and purpose discovered. Becoming a Dragon gives an insight into this process, the highs and lows, tears and smiles as teams from all over the world compete. This tournament encapsulates the power of sport and uncovers the desperate need we may not recognise in ourselves the need to belong.
Becoming a Dragon was made by campaigner and filmmaker Ed Kirwan (OW 2010), who co-founded the We Make Change Homelessness Community which encourages collaboration between organisations working to end homelessness. Ed will be joining us for a Q&A session after the screening, which is also the film’s premiere.
