A Very English Christmas?

In this festive sequence, The Gramophone Award-nominated singers of The Marian Consort bring together music by one of the greatest composers of the Renaissance, Thomas Tallis, with works by his English compatriots Tye, Sheppard and Ludford. At the heart of the programme is the Gloria from Tallis’s magnificent seven-voice Missa Puer Natus Est, a setting thought to have been written to celebrate the marriage of Queen Mary to Philip II of Spain in 1554, with the chosen subject a not so subtle reference to Mary’s supposed pregnancy.

This mass, with its shimmering, densely-woven texture which owes much stylistically to the music of Tallis’s Continental contemporaries, is heard alongside works by Alfonso Ferrabosco and Orlandus Lassus that survive in English manuscripts, all brought to life by the 'sublime clarity' of the voices of The Marian Consort.
