A Celestial Banquet

A Celestial Banquet

The grand siecle was the Golden Age of French power and wealth, the age of the Sun King. It is hardly surprising, then, that top-rate artists were cultivated to give voice to the glory and abundance of the times. One of the best, Marc-Antoine Charpentier, was a prolific writer of sacred music, and his Missa Assumpta est Maria is the most accomplished of his mass settings. In this programme, it is intertwined with string trios by his contemporary across the water, Henry Purcell. Their distinctive voices cannot hide a musical kinship bringing Paris and London into close embrace. Their compositional manners had more in common than their distinct nationalities might suggest – a moral for our times.

This music will be performed by the Oxford Consort of Voices and Instruments of Time & Truth, under the their francophile director Edward Higginbottom, one of the UK’s leading champions of the cause of French baroque music.
