The concert opens with the sparkling baroque overture to Les Boréades, Rameau's last opera.
This is followed by Schumann's only piano concerto, written for his wife Clara, played by Dominic Piers Smith. This well-loved concerto incorporates flourishes and melodies, alongside drama and romance.
Beethoven considered his seventh symphony to be one of his best, despite it being composed during his worsening deafness. This features beauty, celebratory themes, ambition, and exuberant dance.
