Rossini’s Stabat Mater is, as one would expect from such a master of opera, a superbly dramatic work, with thrilling arias and duets for the soloists and magnificent choruses for the choir, culminating in an electrifying finale. Meanwhile, the sensuous beauty of Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music offers a gentler foil to the Rossini, and prepares us for the commemoration of his 150th birthday later this year.
