For the 5th concert of his Oxford Summer Piano Series, now in its 37th year, award-winning pianist JACK GIBBONS celebrates the 150th anniversary of the birth of Maurice RAVEL, one of France’s greatest composers. Gibbons has championed Ravel’s deeply evocative and irresistible music from the very beginning of his career, playing the masterly Gaspard de la nuit, one of the most challenging works in the piano repertoire, to great acclaim at his 1984 Queen Elizabeth Hall London debut.

Jack Gibbons could be Britain's answer to Ivo Pogorelich. Gibbons's hyperactively poetic account of Ravel's Gaspard de la nuit - more considered, I felt, than Pogorelich's recorded performance - was yet both vivid and hypnotic.
