Climate targets imply a dramatic transformation of the global energy system, yet fossil fuels are likely to remain part of it for decades. Professor Myles Allen CBE FRS, Professor of Geosystem Science at the University of Oxford, explores what this apparent contradiction means for climate policy and the future of oil and gas, including the contested UK developments at Jackdaw and Rosebank. Drawing on his climate research and his new perspective as a Hagler Research Fellow in Petroleum Engineering at Texas A&M, he asks what a credible path to net zero looks like if fossil fuels are not, in fact, going away.

Following Myles’s presentation, he will be joined in conversation by Stephen Fisher, Professor of Political Sociology at Trinity College, whose research on attitudes to climate change includes the Peoples’ Climate Vote surveys for the United Nations Development Programme. More info available HERE
