Beethoven’s well-loved Egmont overture features heroic themes about the death of Count Egmont and triumphant liberation from tyranny.
This is followed by Brahms’ double concerto for violin and cello, performed by sisters Rachel and Tabitha Appel. This wonderful concerto combines technical complexity and brilliant with warm lyricism so characteristic of Brahms.
Mendelssohn’s popular 3rd symphony is based on his experiences touring Scotland in the early 1800s, and includes depictions of the Atlantic swells in a storm, and gatherings of highlanders making merry.
