Debussy Préludes, Books I and 2

Bach and Chopin both composed sets of 24 Preludes, theirs in the form of a progression through all the major and minor keys. Debussy’s Préludes are quite different. They are impressionistic rather than tonal, colourful gems with evocative titles like ‘The wind in the plain’ (to be played in a lively manner) ‘The girl with the flaxen hair’ (slowly and expressively) ‘General Lavine – eccentric’ (in the style of a Cakewalk dance). Mme Debussy recalled her husband writing ‘Dead leaves’ on their return from an autumnal walk in the park.

Selections of the Préludes often appear in concert programmes, but they are seldom played as a set. We are lucky to have Jonathan Powell with us. An award-winning pianist and composer, Jonathan is acclaimed for his mastery of works from the late 19th century through to contemporary.
