Haydn The Creation

Completed in 1798, The Creation (Hob. XXI:2) is considered by many to be one of Joseph Haydn's greatest works, and it is certainly one of his most original. It is particularly ahead of its time in the way it uses large forces not to overwhelm the listener, but instead primarily to create a visionary, pastoral atmosphere in sound. The story is a re-telling of the creation myth in the Book of Genesis, and fittingly culminates in the centrepiece of Part III: By thee with bliss, one of the most profoundly moving love duets ever written.
