Arguably the archetypal large-scale choral work, Handel's Messiah (HWV 56) is easy to take for granted. However, its muscular rhythmic character and judicious orchestration speak powerfully of Jesus Christ's world-changing, sacrificial life. Arias such as He was despised and Know that my redeemer liveth show a surprising softer side to the work, but it is clearly primarily an exhilarating choral showcase.
