German pianist Elisabeth Brauß made her mark in the UK as a 2018-2020 BBC New Generation Artist. She came twice to SJE Arts and for her concert last May, gave a programme loosely based on the theme of farewell. It was, by chance, the perfect finale for the SJE Arts Piano Series.
Tonight, she opens with a weaving together of exquisite miniatures by Norwegian lover of folk melody Edvard Grieg and the contemporary Danish composer Hans Abrahamsen. Post interval, she turns to Liszt’s turbulent set of variations on a Bach cantata, born out of the sudden death of his daughter Blandine, and lastly to Beethoven and to the middle sonata of his final three great piano sonatas.
