Brother Tree Sound

A Journey Through British Folk Music

Vaughan Williams: String Quartet No. 1 in G minor (1908-09, rev. 1921)
Holst: Phantasy Quartet on British Folksongs, op. 36 (1916)
Brother Tree Sound (arr.): Folksongs from England, Ireland & Wales

In the first of two concerts in three days exploring string quartet pieces by 20th British composers, we offer two key works by Holst and Vaughan Williams that follow up their composers’ respective breakthrough works in orchestral form that were inspired by folk music and were closely associated with the founding of the English Folk Dance Society in 1911. The programme is completed by Brother Tree Sound’s own transcriptions of folksongs from England, Ireland and Wales. This concert is also notable for being the first of two given by Brother Tree Sound this year, with their second, focusing on contemporary British music written 100 years later than this concert, taking place in January.
