Fri 31 Mar, Wesley Memorial Church
Although there has been a Methodist presence in New Inn Hall Street since 1783, the present church was built in 1878. To celebrate the centenary in 1978, the interior of the church was re-ordered replacing the pews on the ground floor with chairs. As a result, we have been able to use this space not only for worship but also for concerts, plays and musicals, art exhibitions and public meetings. Recent events have included BBC Songs of Praise (Easter 2011) and a series of concerts by the Oxford Sinfonia in 2012. Concerts in 2013 have included the Oxford Gospel Choir, the Oxford University Brass Band, The Starfire Singers from Los Altos Methodist Church in California performing Justix, The Moonrakers Folk Group and a Piano Recital by Alexander Ardakov.
Facilities: Toilets, disabled access, rehearsal rooms, refreshments (no alcohol) sometimes available if provided by promoter. No parking facilities.
New Inn Hall Street,
East meets West is a touring collaboration between the Oxford – based Russian pianist Ilya Chetverikov and the English cellist Ruth Henley, who will be performing music from their respective countries. The concert opens and closes with two mighty Russian sonatas, those of Shostakovich and Rachmaninov. The central piece is a new work, the Sonata No 3, by Paul Henley who is Ruth’s husband. He was recently highly commended in a competition run by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, adjudicated by Mark-Anthony Turnage. The third sonata is a work full of both drama and beauty, readily accessible to its audience and engaging for the performers.
Ruth Henley, twice winner of the chamber music prize at college, is a highly experienced recitalist. She has performed extensively in the United Kingdom including as soloist in many of the major concertos, among them those by Elgar, Schumann and Dvořák
